The FarmA working farm in the Fleurieu Peninsula. Come and stay in our Cottage and tour the farm. A truly unforgettable South Australian farmstay.
The view from the top paddocks, especially,
is inspiring. The Photo shows a flock of superfine Saxon morino ewes,
noted for their beautiful, soft , non-scratchy wool. (Angel's underwear
is said to be made from this type of wool!). Unfortunately, humans place
a lesser value on the fibre than we need to make its production viable,
so we now produce prime lamb for the food market rather than wool, although
there are still some wool sheep on the farm.
We run approximately 450 ewes on our Port Elliot property, and
hope to be able to sell about the same number of prime lambs each year.
For those interested, we are willing to run both the wool rams and the meat rams
into the yards so that guests can get a close look at them and "hands-on" to
feel the softness of the types of wool. Lambing time
is usually in May/June each year and if we pick up any orphans or strays,
we feed them until about Aug/Sept. This is usually a highlight for young guests. A quiet run around the lambing
flocks is made each day and guests are welcome to accompany us. These are
sometimes good educational events for youngsters if a lamb is being born at the time of checking the ewes. |
